Nutley, NJAMERICAN LEGION ANNOUNCES 2008-09 OFFICER SLATE
American Legion Post 70 announced their slate of officer candidates for the 2008-09 year during their April general membership meeting. The election will be held on May 1 beginning at 8PM in the meeting room of the Post located at 45 Franklin Ave.
This is the 90th consecutive year that the Nutley American Legion Post will be holding such an election since the Post was one of the very first formed as a result of Teddy Roosevelt’s post-WWI recommendation. “It’s amazing to think that my last two years are part of a legacy that goes back so far and has such historic significance” said Henry DelTosto, the Post’s outgoing Commander. The 2008-09 candidates are Andrew Vyniski-Commander, Harold Bottino-1st Vice-Commander, Henry DelTosto-2nd Vice-Commander and Adjutant, Jennifer Gentles-Finance Officer, Rich McClintick-Chaplain, Frank DeCroce-Historian, Ed Tremmel Jr.-Service Officer, and Walter McDonald-Sgt-at-Arms. Mr. Vyniski has been a member of the Nutley Legion Post for 17 years. Andy was born in Newark in 1942. He currently lives in Nutley with his wife of over 40 years, “Ginny”. His family life has been full as evidenced by his 2 children and 3 grandchildren. When he’s not working or contributing time to veterans’ or the community he enjoys collecting military memorabilia and artifacts. A US Navy veteran, he served on the Terrebonne Parish (LST-1156) a tank landing ship. Andy has always been active in veteran’s organizations. Andy is also a 30+ year member of the VFW where he has been Post Commander three times as well as District 4 Commander.
An installation ceremony for the new officers will held on May 23 at 8PM at the Post. Joseph Towe, American Legion Department of NJ Executive Committeeman, will officiate at the ceremony. Mr. DelTosto, the outgoing Commander, will officially relinquish command of the Post at the end of the NJ State American Legion Convention parade which will be held on June 14 in Wildwood, NJ.
The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic, mutual-help, war-time veterans organization. A community-service organization which now numbers nearly 3 million members -- men and women -- in nearly 15,000 American Legion Posts worldwide the Legion has a very strong commitment to Children and Youth oriented programs. American Legion Posts are organized into 55 Departments -- one each for the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, France, Mexico, and the Philippines. Nutley Post 70 is part of the department of NJ. Membership is open to anyone who served at least on day on Active Duty while the nation was involved in a congressionally recognized conflict. There are also membership opportunities for the spouses and descendants of veterans within the larger organization.

Each year a Coloring Contest is conducted as part of the Post’s Americanism and Children & Youth activities. A “poster”, provided by the NJ American Legion is distributed to all Nutley elementary schools. This year some 240 children participated in the program and showcased a wealth of artistic talent. The number and quality of the entries made the job of selecting “winners” a real challenge for non-artists. Nevertheless, 1st Place was awarded to Edward Punzalan of Radcliffe School. Ed received a certificate along with a check for $50 to mark this achievement at our February membership meeting and his entry will be forwarded to our Essex County organization for consideration as the county winner. Those students awarded a certificate and a $20 check for Honorable Mention were also recognized at the meeting. These students were; Chiara St. Amant of Yantacaw School, Nidia Bernal of Washington School, David Fleurantin of Good Shepherd Academy, Kimberly Martinez of Lincoln School and Rachel Alessandra-Cordasco of Spring Garden School. If you would like to see their artwork visit our website (www.alnutleypost70.com) and click the link on our Home Page. Thanks to Coloring Contest Chairman Frank DeCroce and all the people who helped make this project a success.

American Legion Post 70 and their Auxiliary, Unit 70, have a long history of supporting the patients of the EA VA Hospital and this Christmas they cranked it up a notch. Normally the visit to the East Orange VA Hospital involves several games of Bingo with “canteen books” of coupons for prizes, refreshments from Unit 70, and a bit of socializing with the patients. “Each year the Auxiliary donates their time, their talents, and their money to make the holiday party special for those veterans who cannot be with family and friends” said Lisa O’Malley, President of Unit 70. Henry DelTosto, Commander of Post 70, indicated that “the Auxiliary’s work took the majority of the year. This year the veterans received not just canteen books, but hand-made stockings filled with sugar-free candy and gift bags overflowing with personal items.” According to Lynne DelTosto “30 gift bags, some of which contained beautiful lap blankets crocheted by Evelyn Denkinger, were created for the veterans. Among the items in the gift bags were toothbrushes, toothpaste, puzzle books, felt-tip pens, hats, socks, and other personal items that the patients would find useful.” Lynne said the handmade stockings that held the candy took her just over a year to crochet. One of the patients who received a lap blanket immediately placed it on her bed. “It makes my hospital room look so homey”, she said, “and you can’t imagine how important that is when you are confined to a hospital room during the holidays”. Extra stockings and gift bags were left with the Recreational Rehabilitation department of the hospital for any patients who admitted to the hospital’s 12 floor ward during the remainder of the holidays. On the trip back from the hospital Rich McClintick, Post 70’s Chaplain, said “I don’t think anything can top the good feeling I got from doing such a little thing for these veterans who have given so much”. Ed Tremmel, and Lynne and Henry DelTosto, who represented the Legion at the VA Hospital party agreed wholeheartedly.

SYA GETS HOLIDAY GIFT FROM POST 70
For the third year in a row the Nutley Special Young Adult (SYA) program benefited from the generosity of the local American Legion Post. “Three years ago Harry Bottino, a member of Nutley American Legion Post 70, suggested that individual members make a donation for which they would receive a holiday decoration they could personalize and display in our lounge with the proceeds going to the SYA” said Commander Henry DelTosto. “Everyone thought it was a great idea and we’ve continued it every year” said Henry. “The response we had in the first two year was great, but I wanted to do even more this year” said Harry Bottino. Donations were received from Post members, guests at Post functions, people who learned about the project on the Post’s website (www.alnutleypost70.com) as well as from the the Nutley Fire Department who toured town with Santa. These donations more than doubled last year’s total and raised $425. Henry DelTosto and Harry Bottino presented a check to the SYA at a brief ceremony on December 21, 2007. Tony Giansanti, an SYA staff member, added “We rely on the community for help and donations so that we can service these young men and women”. The program was started by a group of concerned Nutley parents in 1975 when the state of NJ terminated educational services for children with disabilities over the age of 21. Construction of the SYA building began four years later on land leased from the township of Nutley. “Even then, we relied on a significant contribution of time and materials from volunteers and town officials” said Tony. Today the SYA is going strong with more than 20 young adults participating in a program that provides education, recreation, and the opportunity to develop self-
help economic skills. Pictured, left to right, are Harry Bottino, Chad Gallager who is a member of the SYA, Tony Giansanti who is an SYA staff member, and Henry DelTosto who is Commander of American Legion Post 70, as the check was presented. Thanks to Harry for running this worthwhile holiday project, thanks to the members that supported the effort, and a special thanks to Nutley’s Fire Department Santa (who is a member of our Post) and his helpers for making this years program such a success.

Post 70 once again served as a "rest stop" for Santa as he made his way around the Town of Nutley on Saturday. Santa, along with a legion of elves dressed in Nutley Fire Department bunker gear, arrived atop a Nutley FD ladder truck at 11:00 AM. During the 30 minute break Santa and the elves consumed donuts and coffee.
According to Santa, Post 70 has been "very good" this year and, as a result, his elves left a $45 donation for the Post's Special Young Adult fundraising effort. "These guys and gals from the Nutley Fire Department are just great" said Harry Bottino who initiated the SYA fundraising effort a few years ago. "Not only are they volunteers who spend the better part of a day binging holiday cheer, but they reached into their own pockets to support a charity that's important to us". The Post is proud to help in this small way and has already told Santa's secretary to count on us next year.
